FREE Workout and Winning Words from Jillian Michaels Jillian Michaels, hard-core trainer extraordinaire, is gracing the cover of SELF's July 2009 issue. As a fitness professional, I'm always interested in what she's up to—on TV, in her workout DVDs and everywhere else. So I grabbed this issue when it hit my desk and turned straight to page 36 to read her story. In the article, Jillian lets the readers in on a few behind the scenes secrets about "The Biggest Loser," and in her own life—like how even she enlists the help of a personal trainer to keep her in tip-top shape. (Who knew?) Some of her words, reflecting on how she helps clients and contestants on "Loser" were truly inspiring, so I wanted to share them with you. Plus, I'm sharing a new
FREE workout video from Jillian Michaels and SELF with you! On the topic of making time to exercise and get your health under control, Jillian says:"It's OK to put yourself first. Selfish isn't a dirty word. It we were all selfish, it would mean we would take care of ourselves and be able to give back to our loved ones."Most of us are guilty of being people pleasers, especially those of us who are parents, caretakers, and busy professionals. How often is everyone else at the top of your to-do list while you're at the bottom—or not even on it at all? Jillian talks about how she tries to give people permission "be awesome" (love that!) and take care of themselves, saying that selflessness is NOT a good trait—nor is it a positive example for your kids. "Would you treat your kids the way you treat yourself?" she asks. "Would you deprive them of playtime and adequate sleep? Would you not make their doctors' appointments? No!" Sadly, this is often how we treat ourselves, even though we deserve fun, downtime, and personal time—like to exercise. These are some wise words that most women cannot hear often enough. When talking about fitness, she says it's not about looking hot in a bikini:"To me it's not about building a better body. It's about building a better life."I love this and I agree wholeheartedly. I've taken flack for my imperfect figure—I don't look anything like Jillian Michaels, and to some onlookers, that must mean that I'm not "fit." But my goal is not to have the body of the fitness model. Sure, that'd be awesome in a lot of ways, but like most of you, my life is multidimensional and I want to spend my time on other things. Being fit and healthy is what allows us to do that. My goal is to be fit enough to remain strong, capable, and healthy, and live a long, independent life—one that's rich with family, friends, fun and memories—not hours clocked in the gym. Isn't that what we all want? Isn't that WHY we're trying to be fit—not just for the sake of doing it, but to enjoy life more fully? "And if your health is your platform for life," she says, "it's got to be rock solid. If you want to take on the world, you need a good foundation." The Unique Colors LeBron James XI Black Green Shoes ID 8899623 I'll drink (water) to that!Overall, Jillian really gets personal in this story—not at all like her "angry trainer" persona on TV (which she also talks about in this interview). I highly recommend checking it out!Now that you've been motivated by Jillian's wise words, how about a new workout? She has teamed up with SELF as a contributing editor, and has lots of tips and videos on their website. That's where I found this KILLER workout routine, which is part of SELF's great one-month slim down! If you're looking for some new multitasking moves to add to your strength routine, you will love these! To pump us up even more, we asked two veteran SparkRally organizers from Georgia, Marilyn (MRSWIGGLY6) and Sheila (MCDIDDLYD), to share some tips--and enthusiasm--with the dailySpark! Marilyn has been with SparkPeople for a year and has really improved her health by drinking water regularly, getting more fiber and protein, and losing almost 40 pounds! Sheila has lost 88 pounds, gained confidence in herself and broken some bad habits during her two years with SparkPeople. Back in April, they planned SparkRallies across Georgia that drew 116 The Link people. They played games, took walks, met with SparkPeople members in the person, and most importantly--Spread the Spark! Why did you decide to host a SparkRally? Marilyn: Since becoming leader of Spark Georgia, I would read posts of SparkMembers hunting for workout buddies in their area. The main purpose was to let people know there are people even in your own neighborhood who are trying to get healthy through SparkPeople, to possibly form that bond with someone that actually lives close by. Then Sheila and I talked about hosting one, and then we decided to have the Georgia rally in different locations to give members a chance to go to a rally close to them. What did you do at the Rally? Marilyn: We met at a Sweet Water Park in Lithia Springs, Ga. When Members arrived, they received goodie bags filled with healthy snacks and coupons. Several goodie bags had SparkPeople key chains or window clings or a door prize, like a SparkPeople workout DVD. We played ladder golf--something like horseshoes, but you throw golf balls that are attached to ropes. This was a great icebreaker for the members. I welcomed the members to the Spark Rally, explained to everyone that we wanted to give them the opportunity to meet and maybe find a workout buddy. We had some speakers who talked to us about healthy living and weight loss. Later we hiked and raffled off gifts donated by local businesses. What was the best part about the Rally? Marilyn: Getting to know each other and sharing our stories and successes. The motivation of the members was amazing, and I know that several have already been making plans on meeting again at different parks just to go walk together. Sheila: The best part of the Rally was that we all had a fun-filled and beautiful sunny [imghttp://www.cheaptopjordan.com/images/topjordan/Air Jordan 1 Joker Night Vision.jpg[/img]
day at the lake. It was great! I got to meet my fellow SparkPeople members and make new SparkFriends. What a great way to meet people face-to-face and get to know one another, talk about our goals and our weight loss. And to know we were all there for the same reason sharing our stories! Why is it important to spread the Spark? Marilyn: Wow, where do I start? There are so many reasons to Spread the Spark. There are so many people who dont know about SparkPeople that I feel a need to tell them of the free resources that SparkPeople has to offer. SP teaches us about healthy living, and knowing there are so many of us doing the exact same thing--trying to get healthy--is motivating. In order for us to survive, we have to change our minds and bodies. SP teaches us how to do this with the tools and resources they have to offer.Sheila: It's important to your family and friends to help them start a new healthy lifestyle. Other reasons: believing in yourself, learning the health benefits and the importance of making healthy choices. Giving encouragement and knowing you can be successful in achieving your goals. Having a positive outlook on life. What effect did the Rally have on you? Marilyn: It has motivated me to achieve other goals. A lady at my rally said, I almost didnt New Colors-Nike Air Force 1 07 White White Shoes ID 8899623 come as I didnt know anyone here. She soon told us that she was so glad she did. That was the main purpose of attending a rally--meeting new people. At the rally, I greeted a woman. When she looked up (from the sign-in table), I was floored to realize she worked with me. We both looked at each other in amazement--we never knew that we belonged to SP and worked for the same company. Sheila: This was my very first Rally, and the effect it had on me was so overwhelming. Meeting with other Spark members and putting faces to names, talking about our goals and meeting their families. It seemed like we knew each other for years. We all have a variety of life stages and interests but our goals were the same: losing weight and getting healthy. This was something I will never forget. I miss seeing my new SparkFriends and can't wait to meet up with them again.Do you have any plans to host another Rally? Would you? Marilyn: Actually, we do have plans to hold another one on June 27th at Buford Dam. This will give Sheila and I a chance to meet each other. We spent hours on the phone organizing and finding the other locations this time, but we never did got a chance to meet each other. So we are planning on having a get together and for anyone that would like to attend can come meet us together. If you live in Georgia, be sure to check out Sheila and Marilyn's SparkRally by joining the SparkGeorgia Team. Live elsewhere? Host your own! *SparkRallies are organized and run by members. SparkPeople does not endorse, sponsor or organize these Rallies or other member-organized offline meetings. How will you Spread the Spark this summer? Will you attend or host a SparkRally? Does Relaxation Require a Special Drink? One of the top one hit wonder songs of the 1980's was Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The key words to the song were relax and don't do it. Those words also apply to the new line of beverages called relaxation drinks. A new Wall Street Journal article outlines some scary truths about these new drinks that have not been clinically tested but have been touted to lower stress, anxiety and aid sleep. Since key ingredients range from plant extracts to natural Cheap Jordan 7 Shoes human hormones, I thought it would be important to explain a little more about them before you decide if they are right for you. While the UK, Japan, and France are also embracing the relaxation drink craze, the U.S. is the relaxation drink leader hosting dozens of brands. Drink names like Vacation in a Bottle, Mary Jane's Relaxation Soda, Dream Water, and Mini Chill entice people to try the drinks but care is necessary since marketing focus and study claims can be misleading. Take for instance an ingredient in Mary Jane's soda New Jordan Future Shoes called kava root that has scientific evidence for effectiveness in reducing anxiety. Documented kava success was in people with doctor-diagnosed anxiety not day-to-day stress. Therefore, if you are looking to reduce your "road rage" or to reduce anxiety for an airplane trip, you may not find significant benefit. If you have medical conditions, kava root may not be for you either. The Food and Drug Administration warned about kava root back in 2002 because it was linked with severe liver injury that for some people led to liver failure and transplantation. These links with liver injury came from dietary supplements and the company that produces Mary Jane's soda believes it uses a safer method but does suggest consumers limit intake. Another drink, Dream Water, contains a hormone known as melatonin, the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan, and the neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid. Although melatonin may assist sleep in healthy people, in January the FDA issued warnings that it has not been approved as a food additive although companies are marketing these drinks under the category of dietary supplements. Because these blurred lines exist which interfere with consumer safety, legislation has been introduced to regulate dietary supplements. Instead of using questionable relaxation drinks that could put your health at risk and may provide over 150 calories and 45 grams of sugar, perhaps other relaxation options would be better. Try deep breathing or progressive muscular relaxation (PMR) to help you relax and release tension. If your work is stress filled, find easy ways to relax on the job that helps you find your center and does not require artificial drinks. When insomnia keep you from falling asleep or staying asleep, evaluate potential causes and alternative solutions that might help while also improving your health at the same time. Consider yoga and learning poses that help you rest better. Have you heard of relaxation drinks before. Are these something you would consider or are other options for stress and relaxation things you would consider first? Confession: I Gained 10+ Pounds on a Cruise! It's been more than four years since I started changing my life. I have lost well over 100 pounds and, for the most part, kept it off. The scale goes up and down sometimes, but all of the clothes in my closet still fit. How's that for consistency? I've been wearing the same pair of size 8 jeans for more than two years, and I'm committed to be part of that elusive "5% group"--people who not only lose the weight but keep it off long-term! But, I'm not perfect. In fact I'm far from it. I believe that one of the most important factors that separate success stories from false starters is the ability to reject the "all or none" attitude, which has the potential to end a healthy lifestyle. Still, rejecting that "all or none" attitude remains my greatest challenge. I’m still working on it, and I just had the opportunity to practice my skills. My story is an example of what it looks like to reject the all or none attitude and to get back on track. My family and I recently went on a seven-day cruise. I love to cruise. My first was in 2009, and we have done one every year since. So, that makes a total of three cruises where I have had the opportunity to practice what I preach when it comes to healthy living. As we all know, cruises are notorious for having plentiful and delicious (but not always healthy) food. We also know the reputation that cruises have for overeating and weight gain. Every year I have committed to not becoming a cruise statistic.Confession: This year, I did just what I promised myself I wouldn't do. I gained more than 10 pounds during my most recent cruise. Ten pounds! How can that be? I'm going to explain to you how and why it happened, but first I wanted to tell you a little about my previous two cruises and the lessons that I learned from them.Cruise #1 (2009): I booked our first cruise--a short but sweet 3-day getaway--well in advance, then spent months dreaming about beaches and drinks with umbrellas. I planned to live it up, maybe gain a pound or two. But, a sudden opportunity to be featured in People magazine popped up and my photo shoot (in a bikini!) was four days after my cruise! Of course, I now had to change my plans. I couldn't do all of the overindulging that I had planned, and I had to be mindful of everything that I ate. My plan was that I was going to eat sensibly for breakfast and lunch and splurge a little for dinner. But, the minute I stepped onto the ship and heard the Caribbean music playing and saw little old ladies sipping colorful drinks with umbrellas I said "Forget it!" I boarded the ship at 150 pounds and disembarked at 156 pounds. I gained 6 pounds right before a bikini photo shoot! (Did I really gain 6 pounds? We will get back to that in a moment.)Cruise #2 (2010): This cruise was a longer--five days instead of three, which meant more time to remember the lessons I learned from the first one. I recited my plan in my head for days before we set sail. I was determined to indulge gain a maximum of 2 pounds on this cruise, my second. I had an opportunity to succeed where I had failed the year prior. My plan was to:Include a source of protein at every meal.Eat loads of non-starchy veggies at each meal to fill me up.Order only one dessert at dinner this year. (You don't have to order three just because you can, Birdie!)High fiber! No ordering room service at night (remember those 2 a.m. cheeseburgers?)More exercise. (Do you seriously think that reclining by the pool all day constitutes exercise?)I boarded the ship at 153 pounds and disembarked at 158 pounds. 5 pounds! Oops, I did it again! (Did I really gain 5 pounds?)Cruise #3 (2011): This was a 7 day cruise. I had difficulty on a three-day cruise and a five day cruise, and now I was attempting a seven-day cruise? But, I had two cruises under my belt and I felt that I was ready to improve upon my last two performances. This cruise was a little trickier than the previous two. We booked it last minute and I had Cheap Jordan Sale very little time to prepare. I came in at a cool 153 for the cruise. Here was my chance to get it right and beat the statistics. I came off the ship at 167 pounds. 14 pounds! Wow! (Did I really gain 14 pounds?)So how did I gain all that weight? Easy. My meals and snacks consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, milkshakes, butter-infused steaks, potatoes with cheesy, creamy sauce, pizza, and boatloads of chocolate chip cookies. Let's not forget the fruity drinks with the umbrellas (the ones that kids can't have!).Those mega portions of high-fat food are a far cry from my usual meals of high-fiber cereal, healthy frozen meals, and our family favorite, Salsa Chicken.I'm sharing my cruise experiences with you to show you that perfection is not required for weight loss or maintenance. Now it's time to assess the damage.Even though I didn't want to I hopped on the scale as soon as I got home. I was shocked. How in the world did I gain 14 pounds? I'm not quite sure what I was thinking. I've been living this lifestyle for more than four years. I live with an ever-present element of restraint. But when I get into certain situations (like easy, unlimited access to any and all foods), I throw caution to the wind, telling myself that I can get it off later on.Back to the weight gain.Did I actually gain those 14 pounds? I sure did! But, I think the question you should really be asking is: Did I really gain 14 pounds of fat? The answer is NO. In order for me to gain 14 pounds of fat on that cruise I would have needed to eat about 49,000 over my daily caloric needs (or 7,000 extra calories per day). Did I do that? No. The weight on the scale was the literal weight of the food and waste in my body and the fluid that I retained to process the tremendous amount of calories I consumed. Fourteen pounds is difficult for the average person to gain in 7 days. In my case, I believe that I have to capacity to gain more weight in the form of water than most because I have a significant amount of excess skin that the water can hang out in.I'm writing this at six days post cruise and I am down to 160 pounds. Did I gain seven pounds of fat? Maybe. But it doesn't really matter because I am back to my routine and I'm in my regular environment. The rest of the weight will come off when it comes off--whether it's excess water or fat. I'm not going to succumb to the “all or none” attitude here at home. Getting back on track is also much easier if you have a support system (thank you, Nick, my wonderful husband!). If you take home any lessons from my confession and hope that you took away these:1. Sudden weight gain after falling off the horse is not all fat gain.2. Always get back on plan. Even if you feel like you have failed. As you can see, I’m far from perfect. I accept this and I use the pivotal concept of balance to work on correcting my bad choices. Even though I work daily on understanding the impact of my choices on my health, I will invariably make bad choices. We all will. Attempting to achieve balance is what helps me regain my equilibrium when my choices send me off track. Although I am working toward the idea of having balance in every moment of my life, the reality is that being balanced for every second, minute, hour, and certainly on a week vacation is not routinely achieved. I always try to remember that balance over time is what matters!Do I hope to go on another cruise next year? Yes. Do I have any grand plans to prevent weight gain? Not really. It has been three years in a row that I have come through cruise weight gain and I'm not back at my starting weight.I don't weigh 292 pounds. I did learn more lessons from this cruise that I will attempt to use next year, but if all else fails, I know I can get back up if I fall.Vacations can lead to you getting partially or even completely off plan. You may even relapse into pre SparkPeople behaviors for weeks after your vacation has ended. Will this cause you to gain all the weight back? Only if you let yourself give in to the negative thoughts that are the breeding grounds for excuses to give up. As SparkPeople members I hope that you know by now that "all or none" behavior is dangerous for maintaining your new lifestyle. If you fall, dust off your knees and get right back up. Vacations are meant to be enjoyed and remembered. Forgive yourself for any slip-ups and get back to your routine. Your path to better health awaits!Do you go off track on vacation? How do you get back on track? Do you fall prey to the "all or none" attitude? How do you fight it? Artesa Winery | Wine Country This Week Magazine Wineries, Wine Tasting, Wine Tasting Maps Fri, 04/14/2006Artesa Wineryby Charles NeaveCodorniu, the Spanish company that owns Artesa Vineyards & Winery in the Carneros District, may be 450 years old, but their winery and tasting room looks like it could have been built tomorrow. It is, in fact, one of a very small handful of wineries that places almost as much importance - in style, creativity and craftsmanship - on the building as they do on their fine wines. (In fact 'Artesa' means 'handcrafted' in Catalan, the language of Barcelona and of the winery's owners. In this case it applies to both wines and architecture) A visit to this ultra-premium winery, which was completed in 1991 after two years of work (and around $30 million), is literally a delight to both the palate and to the eye. From the moment you see the hilltop winery, ascend the steps, stand at the edge of the reflecting pool with its perfectly-designed fountains, and look out across vineyards and pastures that extend to the upper reaches of the San Francisco Bay, you know that this is a very special place. In addition to estate and non-estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Artesa, produces Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, a Reserve Sauvignon Blanc aged in oak, and a few specialty wines, including late harvest Gewürztraminer. They are crafted from fruit sourced both at the 173 acre vineyard at the winery as well as at other carefully selected vineyards in Napa and Sonoma counties, and from famous Ferragamo Men Rectangular Buckle Belt White Black Reversible Outlet appellations such as the Russian River and the Alexander Valley.Tastings in the tasting room might include a citrusy Pinot Blanc or a crisp Albarino, a Carneros Chardonnay, a subtle Pinot Noir, a Napa Valley Merlot, a sample of an Estate Grown Tempranillo or a Garnacha Rosado, perhaps an Alexander Valley Cabernet, or even the winery's proprietary blend, a bold, spicy and exotic combination of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals called, simply, 'elements'. There is also a Reserve tasting available, and if it is a nice day, you can take your glass outside to their expansive patio, where the view only heightens the flavors you will find in the glass. In recognition of the company's 15-generation history of turning grapes into wine, they have a museum that shows the history of wine, winemaking, and of the family that founded the winery. There is winemaking equipment, wine cups from 500 BC, casks from the middle of the last millennium, winemaking equipment, photographs and more. The fact that it is in such a modern setting makes it all the more remarkable and visually arresting. Artesa Winery is located at 1345 Henry Road in the Carneros District of Napa (there are directions on their website). They are open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (707) 224-1668 or go to .

Book Review: 'Coffee Is Good For You' I'm an avid reader of health, fitness and nutrition books, both for work and for pleasure. When author Robert J. Davis, PhD, asked me to review his book "Coffee Is Good For You" (Perigee, 2012), I was more than excited. You see, Davis is the founder and editor-in-chief of the website Everwell.com, a long-time partner of SparkPeople's. We have several of their informative videos on our website, and I've always been impressed with how well their messages align with our own. Davis is an award-winning health journalist, author and professor of public health. His videos, articles and books are always well researched, clearly explained, and entertaining to boot. The man knows his stuff. This book in particular gives an overview of the science behind a lot of common diet, nutrition and health "facts" to decide whether there is any truth to these ideas or not. It covers a wide range of long-standing dietary questions (What's better: butter or margarine? Do low-carb diets aid weight loss? Are artificial sweeteners safe?) as well as recent hot topics such as the healthfulness of organic and local produce, whether grass-fed beef is better, the real facts behind the "caveman" (paleo) diet, whether microwaving food in plastic is safe, so much more. Davis' style is to examine all the research available behind such claims to help consumers find the real truth. In some cases, he debunks the myths. In other cases, the research may surprise you and change your mind on a certain issue. And in a few cases, there's a little truth on both sides. I devoured this book cover to cover in just a couple of nights. Not only is it interesting for a person who cares about nutrition and health, but it's also very helpful for anyone who feels confused or tired of it all. One day you hear a food is good for you. The next day you hear that too much of it causes cancer. How do you make sense of it all? Start with this book. No matter what level of education or experience you bring to it, you're going to learn a lot that will better help you become a smarter consumer. Probably what I loved best about the book was not just how it covered these varied and interesting beliefs or questions on nutrition—but how easy they were to understand, and how well Davis Best Quality Nike Zoom Kobe 7th VII Seventh Kobe Bryant Men Red Black War Boots teaches the reader to apply these skills when interpreting everything from health news headlines to the health claims on cereal boxes.I enjoyed reading the book so much that we received permission from the publisher to include a few excerpts (which I handpicked) on SparkPeople.com. So if you'd like to see just a few snippets of what the book has to offer, check out these three collections of excerpts:3 Bittersweet Truths about Sweeteners: What the Research Really Says About High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Honey, and Aspartame8 Tips for Deciphering Diet Claims: Separate the Food Fact from the FictionCan Certain Foods Help You Burn More Fat? What the Research Really Says about Acai, Green Tea, Carbs and DairyHere's another testament to the popularity and intrigue factor of this book: Every person who comes into my office and sees it picks it up, asks me about it, and then asks to borrow it. It actually went missing from my office not once but twice because someone grabbed it from a table to start reading it!"Coffee Is Good For You" is available in paperback ($10.20) and Kindle ($9.99) at amazon.com.Which nutrition myth, claim or question do you wonder about the most?Follow @spcoachnicole

A Shocking Development! By the time you read this, I will probably be about halfway through my first week of a two- or three-week course of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) treatment to see if this helps relieve my depression. In two previous blogs, I had indicated both that I felt pretty uncomfortable with the idea of electric shock treatment (I was a BIG fan of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest), and that I was going to try a non-medical approach to dealing with my depression before resorting to additional biological treatments. But here I am in the hospital, getting hooked up to the ECT machine. What has changed in the past week is the urgency of reducing the effects of this depressive episode on other things. For whatever reason, Ive been somewhat overwhelmed the last few days with a bunch of new memories and flashbacks related to the childhood abuse I experienced for the first 13 years of my life. I dont know if the depression is reducing my capacity to keep those memories away, or whether the memories have been mucking around in my subconscious for a while and generating the depression. Maybe both. Or neither. All I really do know is whats happening right now, which is that I cant handle all of this at once and still function Kids AIR JORDANS 11 in my daily lifesomething has to give. I havent been able to sleep for 3 days, and my anxiety level is a steady 14 on a scale of 1-10.Trying to let the past be the past before its too late.Given that Im 60 now, and that Ive been dealing with this old childhood baggage in one way or another for my whole life, I figure Im not going to have many more chances of getting to the bottom of it. So, my desire is to actively and directly deal with this stuff right now while its coming up on its own, instead of trying to put the lid back on again. That means I need to get myself to the point that Im strong enough to do thatand that means getting through the worst of this depression as quickly and easily as possible. They tell me that ECT is the best treatment when a quick response is the goal, so Ive decided to give it a try. And, honestly, I could do with a week in the hospital right now, with nothing much to do except cope with getting my brain zapped a few times. Some Background InfoI used to believe that ones psyche never gives you more than youre ready to handle at that time, and therefore, that the appearance of new memories and feelings from the past meant that I was ready to handle whatever it was that wanted to make itself known. In my eagerness to cooperate with this process, I told all my various therapists that I wanted to use whatever special techniques they could offer aimed at uncovering what I couldnt remember or couldnt accept as real when I did remember it.When I started out for the first time in adult (voluntary) therapy, I didnt remember anything at all about my family life before my mother died when I was 13. I knew a lot of information--where we lived, what my father did for work, where I went to school, the names of some friends, and so on. But I had no picture memories or narrative memories of my family or our interactions that actually felt like my own. Just words I could repeat if someone asked for my story. I assumed this was the way it was for everyoneuntil my first therapist told me that, in fact, most people can remember (with images, feelings, and stories) most of the important details of their lives after the age of 4 or so. The fact that my family and personal memories started at 14, when I started high school, was interesting, and something I might want to explore in therapy. Right. Interesting. Maybe so, in the same way that guerilla warfare or an atomic bomb is interesting. Because thats how I felt for the next 15 years--like I was constantly walking through a minefield and trying to be prepared to deal with unpredictable assaults from an unseen enemy. A simple bout of good old-fashioned, uncomplicated depression was a welcome break during this time. I dont regret any of the time or effort I spent on trying to figure out and deal with what had actually happened when I was a kid. I know how important that can be for knowing and appreciating yourself as an adult, with all your strengths and weaknesses. What has been frustrating, though, is that this old business never seems to be done. Whenever I think it is, and that Ive come to terms with it, a new wave of memories surfaces and knocks me down again like a sneaker wave.I was pretty dysfunctional, basically, from my divorce and subsequent business failure in 1988, until 2003, when I started losing weight and (a year or so later) hooked up with SparkPeople. After about 18 months as a member, spending a lot of time on the MessageBoards (that was the extent of my social life then, and still is now, for the most part), I was offered a job as Coach Dean, and the next chapter of my life was launched.Ive really enjoyed the last 3 1/2 years, especially my work at SparkPeople. Even though Im not in the office and dont see anyone face-to-face very often, I feel pretty close to several of the staff, have a lot of fun teasing some of the tech guys, and the work itself is great. I really love seeing people do well at working on themselves and moving toward their goals, and feeling like I played some small role in that. And I dearly hope this will continue for quite a while into the future, as soon as I can get myself back to more normal functioning. SparkPeople is a unique organization and a very exciting group of people to be part of.The heart of the matterI think that, somewhere down deep inside, a part of me doesnt believe I can ever have a decent social life as long as am still keeping family secrets from myself and others. When I'm around others, I'm constantly "on-guard" and unable to relax and simply be myself. At this point, all my friends are people Ive either never met in person or seen only a time or two. All my I work as a coach and trainer is done online as well. If my internet and phone service ever go down at the same time, I might as well be marooned on an island in the middle of the ocean. The saddest part of all this is that this is the way I like thingsor at least thats what I tell myself. When Im actually around living, breathing human beings for a significant length of time, I dont do well at allIm prone to panic attacks, bouts of extreme self-doubt and self-consciousness, and actual physical meltdown (extreme sweating, difficulty concentrating enough to participate in a discussion, etc).My life isnt totally bleak, though. In addition to my job, I enjoy my biking and hiking outdoors. And even if I didnt have all my history and psychological baggage to contend with, Im sure I would naturally be a pretty shy person who had only a small circle of friends, so its not as if I had it all at one point and lost it due to some accident or mistake. But it does feel to me like the next step in my personal journey will be about building a wider and deeper set of connections with other people, in real life. I think that my recent surgery and the dependency it caused for several weeks really brought home to me how isolated I am. Aside from my daughter and almost son-in-law, who live nearby, and my sons, who dont, there is really no one who was physically in my life. That doesnt feel good anymore. Im sure its contributing to my depression and anxiety, both because it doesnt feel good in itself, and because knowing that I need to do something about this generates a pretty huge amount of anxiety and fear. What I need, I think, is a real confidante--someone I can talk to about anything at all thats going on, including the unfinished childhood business, without worrying about traumatizing them in the process. I suppose thats exactly what a therapist is supposed to provide, but thats not exactly what I think I need. I need something thats more like a two-way street, not treatment. I need to know whether a regular person can actually stand to see the real me, past and all, and still want to be around me, because I think Ive convinced myself that will never happen. And I need to know that I can open the door to my internal toxic waste dump without hurting anyone. I dont think theres any way to do this intellectually. I can tell myself it all wasnt my fault, that I did nothing I didnt have to do to survive, and that its perfectly safe to know, experience, and talk about anything that happened then or is happening now with me. But Im just not going to believe it until I manage to do it, which is probably the most terrifying thing Ive ever considered doing.Who knowsmaybe Ill run into a kindrid spirit whos in the hospital for the same reasons I am, and well be able to give each other what we both need.Anyway, Ill let you know whats happening as soon as I get out of the hospital again, probably in a couple days.
